Will provide voluntary educational enrichment opportunities
In response to Gov Reynolds’ extension of the statewide school closing through April 30, the Greene County Schools administrative team announced Friday the district will provide voluntary educational enrichment opportunities for students.
According to an update from school superintendent Tim Christensen to students and parents, a “guiding coalition” composed of representative teachers from each building, will develop specific information as to what that enrichment will look like for their particular building. Specific guidance will be shared the week of April 6 and the goal is to start Phase II on Monday, April 13.
Until that time, students can continue to use the Phase I online resource page that was developed for use through the first closure, which was set to end April 10. Continuing to the end of April with that plan would require the district to make up the 14 days of school missed from April 13-30.
Beginning April 13 – Phase II – teachers will develop weekly learning opportunities for students. These opportunities will be shared with students/parents through a video format for those having internet access and in a paper/packet format for students who don’t have internet access. The weekly learning will be shared through a video link or packet enabling students/parents to view them any time throughout the day.
During the week, teachers will arrange times to interact with students via technology or telephone to address any questions students might have about that week’s material. Students will be responsible for sharing some type of “learning product” with the teacher at the end of the week.
“Even though this is considered ‘voluntary educational enrichment,’ it is a requirement for teachers to engage with students. We highly encourage all students to actively participate in these learning opportunities,” Christensen said.
Most households received an Internet Access survey Friday to indicate students’ internet access. The survey should be completed for each individual student. Families who did not receive the survey can access it here.
Students in grades 1-8 can pick up a Chromebook for use during the extended school closure. High school students whose Chromebooks are at the high school can pick them up as well.

Grab-and-Go lunches will continue to be available through April 30 on the same schedule and at the same locations as they are currently.
Christensen also announced that at this time, prom, Senior Awards Night and Commencement will be held. The community will be updated if circumstances change.
Spring activities will follow the guidance of the IHSAA, IGHSAU, IHSMA and IHSSA through April 30. Coaches and directors will continue to communicate with their in-season teams and continue to practice social distancing with all training opportunities.
